Road accidents alarm council

TWO road accidents in two weeks have alarmed Councilor Joel Alangsab.

In a bid to keep roads and motorists safe, Alangsab has called on the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), Benguet Electric Cooperative Inc. (Beneco), City Engineering Office, and the Baguio City Police Office-Traffic Management Office to help them craft measures to lessen the loss of life and property.

Alangsab said the bulk of electric posts owned by Beneco are located beside or along walkways and roads.

“It is also observed that the road widening projects of the DPWH along major thoroughfares expose these trees and posts to motorists, making the posts and trees susceptible to from either being accidental or intentional bumping or being collaterally damaged by vehicular accidents,” Alangsab said.

Alangsab added such susceptibility was shown by the recent accident along Bokawkan that caused massive inconvenience, anxiety and stress to affected constituents, motorists and business establishments including government offices due to road closure, traffic and unwanted blackouts.

The city saw two road accidents last week, which caused massive blackouts and loss of lives when Beneco posts were downed by the collision of vehicles, causing a massive traffic jam.

The coming of the DPWH, Beneco and the City Engineering Office will aid legislators’ asses measures to be done to mitigate and lessen the toppling of electrical posts and trees by motorists.
