Malilong: Rama-Labella or Labella-Rama?

FAKE news or true news? Useless one without the other, so says, in effect, presidential spokesperson Harry Roque.

“Without fake news, we won’t know what’s true news. If we don’t know what’s a lie, we also won’t know what’s the truth,” Roque told reporters in Iloilo City.

Right. We will not know light if we do not know darkness, sweet if we do not know bitter, and north if we do not know south. Or if you want it a little more syrupy, you will never feel the joy of love unless you have experienced its pain or ecstasy unless you have gone through agony.

So thank Mocha Uson, said a reader of the Philippine Daily Inquirer. We wouldn’t have known that Mayon Volcano was in Albay if she hadn’t claimed that it was in Naga City. Makes sense, no?

Who will the PDP-Laban pair with Cebu City Vice Mayor Edgar Labella in the elections in the May 2019 elections? Two names have been mentioned, those of Yong Larrazabal and Kenneth Cobonpue.

It’s neither one of them, according to an insider. Larrazabal has a lucrative medical practice. Besides, he cannot just leave the Cebu Doctors University Hospital after the death of his father. Cobonpue, on the other hand, may have made a name for himself internationally but he’s unknown to the common people in Cebu.

My source says PDP-Laban and Barug-Team Rama stalwarts are instead looking at Cebu City South Councilor Edu Rama as a possible Labella running mate. Edu is a nephew of Mike Rama. His late father was governor of Agusan del Norte. His mother is a Roa, who is said to be a relative of a certain Rodrigo Roa Duterte.

My source claimed that Edu is titillated by the idea of running for vice mayor but has remained non-commital out of respect for his uncle, who has publicly declared that he was inclined to run for Cebu City mayor again. Mike could still be hurting from the decision of his Barug allies to take their oath of allegiance to the PDP-Laban without considering his predicament and Edu and his father’s cousins do not want to aggravate the situation.

Edu would be a good partner to Labella. He is young, comes from the south district and is politically pedigreed. The only question is whether Mike would be willing to drop the idea of Rama-Labella III and instead commit his still formidable political resources to a new tandem featuring his former vice mayor and his own nephew.

King or kingmaker, that is the question.
