RFC offroaders club airs environmental advocacy

CLARK FREEPORT -- The Rain Forest Challenge (RFC) has bared its advocacy on environmental protection.

In a recent press conference here, RFC Malaysia founder Luis J.A. Wee said that the international off-road organization has engaged in reforestation and other programs to protect the environment.

“We want to show the media that we are responsible off-roaders. We take care of the environment and we pick up trash. We even clean some campsite in jungle,” Wee said.

He said that RFC coordinates with the Malaysian Forestry Department for its tree planting program to improve the forest cover of their country.

“We also do reforestation by planting. We work with the forestry department where we seedlings and they will tell us which section of the jungle can we plant,” Wee also said.

“We also do self-conservation and things about that so we educate and put into practice and this is part of the thing,” he added.

RFC Philippines on the other hand adopted policy on environmental-friendly and responsible offroading, said Robby Consunji, RFC Philippine representative.

“It’s not just because it is outdoor and it is in wilderness that you can go trampling on everything,” Consunji said.

According to him, there are basic rules on offroading on an environmental note. “There are restrictions, there are things which we will do and things that we will not do.”

“If you set an example it is spilling oil, its living behind garbage, its driving across. We only drive on regularly traversed terrain. We do not open up new ground. We do not add to land erosion,” he added.

Consunji said that RFC Philippines is training and teaching their members to become responsible offroad drivers.

“The assurance is we are not chopping down trees. We are doing the reverse. We’re teaching and training and we are bringing in more resources that are necessary to preserve the environment,” Consunji said.
