AN ELDERLY woman was found dead in a canal at Sitio Caridad, Barangay Patun-an, Calatrava, Negros Occidental Monday night.
Chief Inspector John Joel Batusbatusan, town police chief, identified the fatality as Rebecca Bracamonte, 61.
The victim had a lone slash wound in her throat when found by her kin at 6:30 p.m.
Batusbatusan said Bracamonte regularly left the house around 4 p.m. to gather “kangkong” (swamp cabbage) in a nearby sugarcane field. However, on Monday, she failed to return home before sunset.
He added that they were able to arrest the suspect identified as Rodel Manait, 38, after a witness surfaced.
Manait, the victim’s neighbor, was arrested in a follow-up operation in the area around 10 a.m. on Tuesday.
Batusbatusan said Manait sustained bruises as the victim probably tried to fight back.
The suspect is reportedly mentally-challenged.
He is detained at the Calatrava Municipal Police Station for the filing of murder charges.
