Owners of CD stores ‘gang up’ on raiding team

THE Optical Media Board (OMB) confiscated almost P60 million worth of pirated DVDs and CDs in Vision Theatre on Colon St., Barangay Kalubihan, last Thursday evening.

Four OMB agents were hurt after they were allegedly mauled by the owners of five stalls selling the pirated items.

“Nag-conduct kami ng operation dahil may mga complaints sa area na napakaraming pirated. Pagdating namin, naabutan namin na ang dami talaga (We received reports about the sale of pirated CDs in the area),” Arnaldo said.

Arnaldo said they arrived earlier than the Special Weapons and Tactics (Swat) personnel who got stuck in traffic.

While 12 agents of the OMB and 20 of their porters were placing the seized items inside the sacks, some of the stall owners quickly closed their stores.

“Nakita namin na nakabukas pa kaya bumaba na kami to secure the area. Ang problema may mga kasamahan silang nagsidatingan kaya kinuyog kami at may nasaktan na sa amin (Some people arrived and ganged up on us, hurting our men),” Arnaldo said.

One agent, Rogelio Tilingban, was rushed to the hospital for a head injury, while another agent, Renante Arcilla, sustained a bruise on his right cheek. A third agent was hurt in the neck.

“May nag-pacify naman yung mga leaders and we’re thankful for that. Kaso yung ibang sacks na napuno namin ng mga items ay tinatakbo nila (Some cooler heads pacified the crowd. But some of them managed to retrieve the seized items and ran off),” Arnaldo said.

The operation started at around 3 p.m. The commotion happened at 3:30 p.m.

The OMB seized 53 boxes of blank DVDs and CDs, 13 boxes of CD casings, four units of tower burners, 19 units of DVD writers, with a total value of P59,239,250.

Arnaldo said they haven’t caught the culprits as the crowd dispersed when the police arrived. (JOB)
