AFTER retiring from his job as a car parts salesman in Cebu City, Barangay Councilor Edgar Jadraque of Poblacion 1, Malabuyoc, Cebu financed the construction of a fishing boat.
Paulo Jorolan, a 69-year-old fisherman, completed the 15-foot-long sea vessel in November last year.
“Ganahan niya mosulay og kinabuhi sa panagat (He wants to try to live the life of a fisherman),” said Arlene, Jadraque’s younger sister and Jorolan’s daughter-in-law.
Last Sunday, Jadraque, 59, approached Jorolan, who was fixing a net, and he persuaded his friend to catch fish together.
The two sailed past 5 p.m., despite the ugly weather, with cooked rice placed in plastic container as their only provision.
“First time pa to sa akong igsuon nga misakay sa sakayan ug nanagat (It was his first to set sail to fish),” Arlene said in a phone interview. “Lain ang panahon ato. Baloron ug hanginon (It was windy).”
Eight hours later, at 2 a.m. Monday, February 5, Jadraque told Jorolan they would go home to cook some of their catch
