IT'S official. We can now fly directly to Kuala Lumpur from Davao. Traveling to the neighboring city is now faster and more convenient -- no connecting flights, layovers, lugging of luggage from one terminal to another.
The Davao-Kuala Lumpur flight of AirAsia was one of the great news to end 2017. Travelers, most especially, were elated with the new international route, which operates with four times weekly flights between the two cities.
Recently, the new AirAsia route that connects the two cities was made official via a well-attended dinner affair and a press conference. On the panel were Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio; Department of Tourism Assistance Secretary Eden David; AirAsia Deputy Group CEO-Digital, Transformation, Corporate Services Aireen Omar; and AirAsia Berhad CEO Riad Asmat.
“AirAsia is excited about our first international route to Davao. We do not only connect Davao to Malaysia, but we also bring Davao closer to our extensive network in Asean, Northeast Asia, South Asia, Australia, the Middle East and the US,” Omar said.
“We are committed to growing tourism beyond the most famous tourism hotspots. We look forward to working closely with the Davao City mayor, airport authorities and government bodies to put Davao on the list of must-visit destinations in Asean,” she added.
Duterte-Carpio welcomed the new route, saying: "We are honored to join AirAsia as it formally launches the Kuala Lumpur-Davao route that will open up a window of various opportunities for many sectors. We thank Mr. Tony Fernandez and AirAsia for choosing Davao City as its newest point of destination out of Kuala Lumpur. This route, an expression of your commitment to Asean connectivity and the growth to the Asean-members states, is truly a welcome development for the Philippines and Davao City."
rThe mayor acknowledged that air connectivity is a major component in strengthening tourism, business and foreign relations as it creates more direct people-to-people linkages.
“As part of our Asean community, we are excited for this new route to not only bring our two cities closer but also link Mindanao and its industries to our Malaysian neighbors and vice versa. Now more than ever, this city is ready to receive visitors,” she added.
The Davao-Kuala Lumpur route is the third direct route from Malaysia to the Philippines after Manila and Cebu. AirAsia also connects guests to other cities in the Philippines, including Clark, Manila, Caticlan, Kalibo, Tacloban, Palawan, Cebu and Tagbilaran.
