Illegal structures in Barangay 31 set for demolition

THE Cagayan de Oro City Task Force Demolition is set to destroy illegal structures along the road of Barangay 31 after the planned site visit in the area on February 20.

During a coordination meeting on Thursday, February 8, Colonel Mario Verner Monsanto, chairman of the Task Force Demolition, said even without a court order, more than 10 houses built along the road will be demolished.

"Dili man gub-on ang tibuok balay, depende sa gidak-on sa ilang paglapas, kay alang man kini sa safety sa community (The entire house will not be destroyed. It depends on the extent of encroachment. It's for the safety of the community)," Monsanto said.

This was echoed by Architect Maria Concepcion Alcantara, officer-in-charge of the Office of the Building Official, saying there is an existing law that prohibits the encroachment on the road by any structures.

"Kadto rang nasa dalan, katong naka encroach, kato ra gakuhaon sya kay naa tay balaod nga ang dalan dili gyud siya paga gamiton sa tao nga iyang balayan or negosyohan (Only along the road, those that encroached the road, those structures will be demolished since we have a law that prohibits the building of structures along the road for residential or business purposes)," Alcantara said.

There is still no actual date set for the demolition, but according to Alcantara, a site visit will be conducted on February 20 to assess the situation in the area so as to avoid chaos during the actual demolition.

Alcantara said this is also for the profiling of the City Housing and Urban Development Department (CHUDD), to identify how many structures will be demolished, how many families will be affected, and how many of those affected families are qualified for relocation.

"Giingnan namo si kapitan (Barangay Captain Delia Wabe), 'Kap pasabtan sa mga tao, tutal naa may atong CHUDD nga moatiman sa relocation,' (We also told the barangay captain, ‘Cap, please make them understand, since there’s the CHUDD to manage the relocation)," Alcantara said.

She also mentioned that CHUDD disclosed that the people occupying the illegal structures are the same people who were given notices during their first demolition in the same area in 2016.

Alcantara said there are also complaints of wastes being thrown in front of the Pearlmount Hotel, which is located near Barangay 31.

"Dili na sya healthy gyud tungod kay nawala na ang orderliness. So ato rang gibalik ang orderliness ana nga barangay pinaagi sa pagkuha sa encroachment (This is not healthy because orderliness in the area is not observed. So we just resumed the orderliness in the barangay through the removal of encroachment)," Alcantara said.

The demolition of illegal structures, Alcantara said, is also for the safety and security of the community especially in times of emergency such as fire, and to ensure that there are criminals hiding in the area.
