Councilor pushes conversion of 2 Voc-Techs into college

ZAMBAONGA City Councilor Elbert Atilano, Sr. is pushing for the conversion of the two Technical Vocational (Voc-Tech) Schools into a city government-owned college school.

To be converted into a college are the Ayala and Vitali Technical Vocation Schools and will be named Colegio De La Ciudad de Zamboanga.

Atilano said the conversion of the two vocational schools is aimed to bring closer the tertiary education to residents in the far-flung areas.

The Ayala Vocational Technical School is located in the village of Ayala, 16 kilometers west while Vitali Vocational Technical School is in village of Vitali 73 kilometers east of this city.

Atilano said the curriculum of the Colegio De La Ciudad de Zamboanga will be focused on industrial education since this city is considered as an industrial city being the home to the nine of the 12 canning factories in the country.

He said the school will be an option for students who cannot afford to go to private universities and colleges.

Atilano has authored an ordinance seeking the creation of the city government-owned college.

The City Council approved the proposed ordinance on the first reading and has referred it to the City Council’s Committee on Education. (Bong Garcia/SunStar Philippines)
