P1-M fake peso bills seized in Pasig

AUTHORITIES recovered on Tuesday, February 13, P1 million worth of fake peso bills from six alleged members of a syndicate involved in production of fake money.

Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG)- National Capital Region (NCR) chief Senior Superintendent Wilson Asueta said they found the stash after conducting a search for illegal firearms at a house on Sto. Tomas Street Pinalad, Barangay Pinagbuhatan in Pasig City.

The agents also recovered an unlicensed S&W 38-caliber revolver, five 38-caliber live ammunition and two magazines of 5.56.

Arrested during the raid were Jaypee Balis, alleged leader of the group, and members Aladin Akil Dilabuan, Satar Akil, Ramil Badang, Alpha Sabar and Watari Kusay.

The fake bills included nine bundles of P1,000 bills and five bundles of P500 bills. The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas has confirmed these to be counterfeit.

“Hindi mo siya mahalata (na peke) pag inihalo na (sa tunay na pera), talagang maganda ang pagkagawa (You would not be able to distinguish it from the genuine bills),” said Asueta.

He said based on information, a piece of counterfeit P500 bill is being sold for P100 to P150 while a piece of fake P1,000 is being sold for P300.

Asueta they are also looking at the possibility that the fake money will be used for possible vote buying in the upcoming barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections on May 14.

“Pwedeng gagamitin sa pambili ng boto, usually tuwing elections, may kumakalat na fake money. At least na-prevent natin (These may be used to buy votes during the elections. At least, we prevented it),” he said.

The suspects will be facing charges for violation of Republic Act 10591 (or the Comprehensive Firearms law) and the illegal possession and forging of bank notes and possession of implements for falsification. (SunStar Philippines)
