Editorial: Disrespecting a people

THERE is just too much insult a people can take, and Senator Antonio Trillanes IV have been attacking Dabawenyos for quite some time now. It's time to shut the door on him and never allow him to step on our land.

For him to tell the people he gets to talk to abroad that Davao has the highest crime and rape incident, just to destroy its former Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte, is a disservice to all Dabawenyos.

Apparently. Trillanes only thinks he is a senator for his chosen few, and not a senator of the land.

But then, he was the one who chose to be parochial and serve only those that serves his interest, then let him be. Let us all well-meaning Dabawenyos simply erase him from our consciousness -- insults and all.

Just make sure he never sets foot on this land that the people, both migrants and natives have nurtured to be the city that it is today: a city of people whose first instinct is to step forward and help, a city where majority of the people obey the laws, a city where people cooperate with each other, public and private sectors alike, to build on each other's strength and consequently build a city that is not only economically strong but has its morals and values intact.

Such a city is foreign to the eyes of the likes of Trillanes, let him bask in the illusion of greatness among the few people who only have their selfish interests in mind.

He's just one of many senators, he's just one in 103.3 million Filipinos, he does not matter.

Let us as one city continue to build on as we have been building on after claiming back our city from the talons of the communist rebels in the 1980s. Let us look out for each other's back and live the life we have chosen to live -- where people live to serve, not just as public officials but also in our private capacities, and build homes where our children are safe from the made-up rape and criminal statistics Trillanes has no qualms of spreading around, slam the door, throw away the key on inconsequential individuals. Live on.

By the way, Happy Valentine's to all and may we always remember that an abusive person should never be tolerated in our lives, whether as a life partner or a legislator.
