CATHOLICS in Cebu are expected to flock to churches today as Lent begins with the observation of Ash Wednesday.
In an interview yesterday, Cebu Archbishop Jose Palma reminded the faithful of their obligations during Lent, saying the season should be reserved for prayer and penance.
“We are reminded that we are dust and unto dust we shall return.
That we must repent for our sins and believe in the Gospel,” Palma told reporters.
He said Lent is a time to reflect on Jesus’s Passion and death on the cross.
“May our observance of Lent bring renewal so that we receive a new life, a life of grace and become true children of God,” he said.
As this year’s Ash Wednesday falls on Valentine’s Day, Palma urged the faithful to reflect on God’s love.
He also urged the faithful to be mindful of how people are loved and how they love others.
As part of practice, all Catholics 18 to 60 are required to fast or to minimize their food intake on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. (JKV)
