City Council backs BacoLaodiat Coke ban

THE Bacolod City Council approved a resolution expressing support to the BacoLaodiat Festival organizers in banning the sponsorship and sale of Coca-Cola products due to the beverage giant’s continued use of high fructose corn syrup (HFCS).

The resolution, authored by Councilor Cindy Rojas, was approved during the regular session Wednesday, February 14.

Bacolod is celebrating the BacoLaodiat Festival from February 15 to 18.

Rojas said that during the celebration of the MassKara Festival in October last yer, the City Government banned Coca-Cola products in all promotional and advertising materials during the festival nor allowed them to post or install any of their advertising paraphernalia in all festival sites.

She said that banning Coca-Cola products during the festival is an indication of the continued protest in the company’s use of HFCS in its beverages instead of locally-produced sugar.

“The sugar industry is a matter of great concern for all in Bacolod as well as in the Province of Negros Occidental,” she added.

The BacoLaodiat Festival organizers had earlier announced that they will not be using products containing HFCS during the duration of the festival.
