Del Rosario: The purpose driven life – Part 1

FOR many years, I have been wanting to make a video of a summary of the “Purpose Driven Life” book by Rick Warren. I know I will never do justice to the book nor to its author.

But I know that somehow, it will help all those who watch it.

Thus, I dedicate this script and the upcoming video to my family, the Del Rosario clan, my relatives, and our McDonald’s, Veniz and Sunshine families, for whom I will prepare the video.

May this script for the video be a humble attempt to present God’s life purposes for us, as seen from the brilliant eyes, heart and mind of Rick Warren, a man chosen by God to share about our life’s purposes.

Sometime in 2003, i was gifted the book entitled, “The Purpose Driven Life.”

I read it, and I found it the most recommendable book to read, next to the Holy Bible.

Let me share with you what Rick Warren says…

Do you know what are the 2 most important days in your life?

The day you were born, and the day you know why.

What on earth are you here for?

It is sad but true. Many people die without even knowing why they were born.

To discover the purposes of your life, many “self-help” books say: “Consider your dreams. Consider your goals. What are you good at? What are you passionate about? Then aim high, persevere, go for it, etc.”

But think about this. If someone showed you an invention you had never seen nor heard of before, you wouldn’t know its purpose. The invention itself wouldn’t be able to tell you either. Only the creator or the owner’s manual can reveal its purpose.

In the same way, you cannot arrive at your life’s purpose by focusing on yourself. You must begin with God, your Creator.

You exist only because God wills that you exist.

Romans 11:36 says, “Everything comes from God alone. Everything lives by His power, and everything is for His glory.”

You were made by God and for God.

Unless you understand that, life will never make sense.

The bible offers 3 metaphors that teach us God’s view of life.

1. Life is a Test.
2. Life is a Trust.
3. Life is a Temporary assignment

Life is a Test

God continually subjects our character to a test. You and I are always being tested. God watches our response to people, to success, to setbacks, conflict, illness, loss, grief, tragedies, and disappointment.

God tests our faith through our problems. God tests our hope by how we handle our possessions, and God tests our love by how we treat others.

In 1 Cor. 10:13, the bible says, “God keeps his promise, and He will not allow you to be tested beyond your power to remain firm; at the time you are put to the test, He will give you the strength to endure it, and so provide you with a way out.”

Life is a Trust

Our time on earth, our intelligence, opportunities, relationships and resources are all gifts from God that are entrusted to our care and management. We are stewards of what He gives us.

Psalm 24.1 says, “The earth and all that is in it belongs to God, the world and all who live in it are His.”

At the end of our life on earth we will be evaluated and rewarded according to how well we handled what God entrusted to us; everything we do. All that we do at home, all that we do at work, they all have eternal implications.

Do what is right.

The bible says, "Unless you are faithful in small matters, you won’t be faithful in larger ones." (Luke 16:10)

Life is a Temporary Assignment

Realizing that life is a temporary assignment will radically alter our values.

Life on earth is not our permanent home nor is it a final destination. We are just passing through, much like a pilgrim, an alien, a visitor or a traveler.

We all know that life on earth must end someday.

The pursuit of happiness is not what life is about.

In order to keep us from being too attached to earth, God allows us to feel discontent and dissatisfaction in life, longings that will not be fulfilled on this earth.

We will never be completely happy here because we are not supposed to be. Earth is not our final home. We were created for something better.

It is a big mistake to assume that God’s goal for our life is material prosperity or popular success, as the world defines it.

Realizing that life is a temporary assignment will radically alter our values.

My Dearest Del Rosario Family and My Extended Families,

As I prepare this script, may this advance copy of Part 1 of, perhaps 2 or 3 parts, guide us journey through life.

Let us live knowing that LIFE is a TEST. LIFE is a TRUST. And LIFE is a TEMPORARY ASSIGNMENT.

These metaphors are the foundations for living out our purposes in life. Our gratitude to Rick Warren.
