Man killed in shootout in Calatrava

A SUGARCANE farm overseer was killed following a shootout with troopers of Special Action Force (SAF) at Barangay Laga-an in Calatrava town, Negros Occidental early Friday.

Killed was Bolbet Leyte, 42, of the said village. He worked at the sugarcane field owned by Archel Suelto.

The victim succumbed to multiple gunshot wounds.

Chief Inspector John Joel Batusbatusan, town police chief, said the SAF troopers were conducting security operations in the area when they chanced upon a group of men near a hut.

When government troopers approached them, one of the armed men fired at them, prompting the SAF personnel to fire back.

Authorities are still investigating the incident as they have yet to identify the armed men.
