Guv gives P100,000 aid for Joanna Demafiles' burial

ILOILO Governor Arthur Defensor Sr. will turn over Tuesday, February 20, the financial assistance for the burial of slain overseas Filipino worker Juanna Daniela Demafiles.

Pursuant to Executive Order 032, series of 2018, the governor is giving a maximum of P100,000 aid to help the bereaved family prepare a decent burial for her.

The Provincial Government employees also offered a moment of silence to pray for the repose of her soul and justice for her family during their flag raising ceremony Monday, February 19.

Defensor assured the press that the Provincial Government will extend assistance to the family of Demafiles once her remains arrive in Iloilo.

“There is no question to that. We will give assistance,” the governor told the press.

Demafiles was found stuffed in a freezer in an abandoned apartment in Kuwait City on February 6. It was believed that she has been kept in the freezer for over a year after she was beaten and strangled to death by her Lebanese employer and his Syrian wife.

Her death certificate revealed that Demafiles died due to “vital traumatic injuries in the abdomen, chest and pelvic and comparing them to the fractures of the ribs, bleeding and shock.”

The 29-year-old domestic helper is a resident of Barangay Feraris in Sara town and among the bread winners of her family. Her parents were both farmers and she has eight siblings.

She worked in Kuwait in 2014 to help her parents repair their house, which was ruined by Super Typhoon Yolanda, and to send her sister, Joyce, to college.

Her remains arrived in Iloilo on February 17 and she is expected to be buried after a two-week wake. (PR)
