Congestion still a concern at women's dorm

THE Baguio City Jail’s (BCJ) female dorm continues to suffer congestion.

Despite several programs aimed to decongest the female dorm, BCJ warden Chief Inspector April Rose Ayangwa said the facility remains heavily populated with 99 persons per cell.

"Although our female dorm should only accommodate a maximum of 50 persons, the present number of detainees is at 99 persons or half more than what the United Nations Standards require. But due to their size and built as Filipinos, all of the detainees enjoy the use of bed bunks," said Ayangwa.

Fifty three percent of the female detainees were facing charges due to the violation of Republic Act 9165 otherwise known as the Dangerous Drugs Law, 22 percent were due to estafa, while 10 percent was due to theft.

"We also recorded two prisoners with one scheduled for transfer at the Correctional Institute for Women in Mandaluyong with one having a pending case. We also have a case of a child in conflict with the law, and three senior citizens involved in estafa and theft," added Ayangwa.

The city jail was the recipient of the Best New Concept Production Award from Aliw Awards Foundation on December 19, 2017 for the Anatomiya ng Babaeng Pugita Play.

It also received for the second time the Department of Health Red Orchid Awardee in 2017 for being a 100 percent smoke free facility, aside from a plaque of recognition from the City Government for its support and commitment in sharing their services during the Pasadang Pambarangay.

The Baguio City Jail have sustained its quarterly Regional awards as the Best City Jail Implementer since 2016 up to the 4th Quarter of 2017.

It also expanded its Home Visitation Program dubbed as "Pagaaruga ko Kasama Pamilya Mo" with the focus on visiting families of their residents or persons deprived of liberty, former residents join to spread love through participation in home visitation, feeding programs and greening activities.

The female dorm is also part of the Panagbenga 2018 activities with its "Panagbenga sa Piitan" program by exhibiting the livelihood products it produces during the two week long Creative Baguio Exhibit at the Malcolm Square.
