2 cops hurt in IED blast in Rizal

TWO police officers were wounded on Wednesday, February 21, after two improvised explosive devices (IED) exploded in Baras, Rizal.

Chitadel Gaoiran, Police Regional Office 4 public information officer, said based on initial information, the team led by Superintendent Melchor Agusin was on their way to the 80th Infantry Battalion quarters from the Police Provincial Office when two IEDs exploded in Sitio Corazon de Jesus, Barangay Pinugay, Baras, Rizal.

The police officers, who were then on board a service vehicle, immediately moved away from the blast site.

Police Officer 2 Jimmy Talupa and Police Officer 2 Manuel Fanfasan were found injured by shrapnel.

The teams suspected that the devices were planted by members of the New People’s Army (NPA).

On Sunday, six Special Action Force (SAF) men were wounded in an ambush staged by suspected NPA rebels in Sitio San Josef, Barangay San Jose, Antipolo City, Rizal.

The two incidents came after Communist Party of the Philippines founder Jose Maria Sison declared that the NPA, the party's armed wing, is capable of killing one policeman each day to force the government to revive the peace negotiations. (Third Anne Peralta-Malonzo/SunStar Philippines)
