Food stalls in Bankerohan market transferred

IT WILL never be the same night or dawn for some Dabawenyos, at least temporarily, as the all-time favorite food destination, the group of carinderias (food stalls) in Bankerohan Public Market in Davao City were demolished starting Thursday, February 22.

But hold your emotions as it is only temporary and will soon be transferred in another area in the market.

Owners of these carinderias voluntarily dismantled their stores as the lot owner will renovate and build another building in the area.

The carinderia owners have only until March 1 to evacuate the area.

This news went viral when a Facebook page named “Biyahe ni jocs / Chronicles of Jocsology” posted on Thursday dawn photos of the demolished area. Thousands of Dabawenyos commented on the post expressing their disappointment and blues over the news as it has been their place of good and bad memories.

Bankerohan, apart from being the major market in the city, has also been known for its carinderias serving Bulalo, Lechon Kawali, Balbacua and Puto and hot choco, among others.

Here are some comments of Dabawenyos about the transfer: “Wala na atong gina tawag nga second home :( pirti biya ta diri ka palangga. (Our second home is gone, we are so loved here by the owners),” Philipp Monteverde posted on Facebook.

A Facebook user named Sherwin Trinidad Ramos also said: “It's a sad day, we just ate here two nights ago. I guess I will just have to cook my own version of their famous lechon kawali from now on.”

But netizen Jay Em was still hopeful knowing that his beloved carinderias will just transfer near the area.

“Mubalhin ra bitaw sila, happy gihapon ang kawali! (They will just transfer, I can still try their (Lechon) Kawali and be happy!),”he shared.

Meanwhile, the Department of Agriculture plans to renovate Bankerohan Public Market enabling it to be a modernized trading center.

The plan dubbed as Bankerohan Modernization Project was hailed by Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio and has been recommended to President Rodrigo Duterte.

The project is targeted to start this year.

“DA is planning to modernize the Bankerohan public market, making it not only just a wet market but also a farmers’ exchange center,” Agriculture secretary Manny Piñol said in a press statement last 2016.

With modernization project, Piñol described that it will enable the city’s major public market be transformed into a mall-like supermarket that is clean and equipped with modern facilities such as food storage for vegetable and meat products.

The renovation will also house wholesale and retail sections for local products.
