Troops recover high-powered firearms from Abu Sayyaf

GOVERNMENT troops recovered on Thursday evening, February 22, in Calingalan Kaluang, Sulu eight high-powered firearms allegedly owned by members of the Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG), a military official said Friday.

Brigadier General Cirilito Sobejana, commander of the Joint Task Force Sulu (JTF), said members of the Marine Battalion Landing Team 3 of the JTF conducted an operation in Sitio Kadkad, Barangay Pitogo, Calingalan Kaluang, Sulu around 7:30 p.m., Thursday due to reports from concerned citizens regarding a suspicious person in their area.

He said the troops spotted a certain Apo Eting, a member of the terrorist group who was then guarding the firearms including four M16 rifles and four M14 rifles.

However, upon seeing the troops, the ASG member immediately fled the area through a motorized banca.

Sobejana commended the accomplishment of the troops as well as to the residents in the said area for their cooperation.

“The leadership of JTF Sulu believes that with the support of LGUs (local government units) and peace-loving Tausugs as manifested in the recent successful operations, more loose firearms will be recovered and more ASG members will be neutralized,” he said. (SunStar Philippines)
