6 ‘Abu Sayyaf bandits’ die in Basilan clash

SIX suspected members of the Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG) were killed in a clash with advancing soldiers in Basilan province, officials said Saturday.

Brigadier General Juvymax Uy, Army 104th Infantry Brigade commander, said the clash happened at 8:45 a.m. Saturday, February 24, at Sitio Pali, Abong-Abong village, Maluso.

Uy said the troops from the Army’s 68th Infantry Battalion (IB) were on combat operations when they clashed with a group of ASG members.

Senior Inspector Faizal Tandico, Maluso police chief, said six members of the ASG were reported killed during the clash.

Uy said the troops have recovered the remains of an ASG member and a firearm at the clash site.

Combat helicopters had been deployed to provide close air support to the ground troops when the sporadic firefight raged on.

Uy said he had ordered the other troops from the Special Forces Battalion, 64th IB and 18th IB to deploy blocking forces on all possible withdrawal routes of the Abu Sayyaf bandits.

As of noontime, Uy said “sporadic firefight is still ongoing while the troops continue to pursue the fleeing bandits.” (SunStar Philippines)
