Zamboanga Sur village official wounded in ambush

A VILLAGE official was injured while five others were unscathed in an ambush by unidentified gunmen in the hinterlands of Zamboanga del Sur, the police reported Tuesday.

Chief Inspector Helen Galvez, Police Regional Office-Zamboanga Peninsula information officer, said the ambush happened around 8 p.m. Sunday in the village of Salvador, Dumingag town, Zamboanga del Sur.

The victim was identified as Ladio Bayoy, the councilman of Barangay Salvador. He was hit in the left leg.

She said those who escaped unscathed were all village watchmen, whose identities were not immediately known.

Investigation showed Bayoy and five village watchmen were conducting security patrol when they were ambushed by 10 gunmen.

The gunmen fled upon sensing the arrival of troops from the Army’s 53rd Infantry Battalion.

Galvez said investigation continues to establish the identities of the perpetrators.
