Our creative ways can combat boredom

THE eight-hour job can dull our creative spirit everyday. Add to that, their protocols and restrictive rules make us entertain thoughts of quitting and looking for so-called creative jobs.

But first, let’s consider this: Creativity is our natural ability to produce something new, clever, interesting skills even around our limited area. Therefore, maybe you just haven’t found the creative aspect of your current position (office worker or homemaker) and have yet to figure out creative ways of doing it.

We, too, in the artistic fields can fall into the torture of routine. You don’t have to be an artist like me to crave for constant innovation and think, feel, act suffocated by convention. We all want to cultivate fresh ideas and aspire for freedom.

These suggestions might help us balance our present life. Don’t quit – not yet. Rather have your creative ways combat being unduly tired, tactless, hostile, irritable, sarcastic, hysterical or worrisome.

*Mingle. We may expand our horizon by expanding our circle. Sometimes, new friends can give us a new outlook in life. We won’t get it when we spend most of our time with those who know us too well and already share our beliefs. We need someone who’ll challenge us every now and then.

*Volunteer. It is one avenue for us to exercise our passions. For example, if you’re a PR head by profession but are particularly good at Chemistry, share your skills by providing tutorial services at a public school. Another example, if you’re a musician at heart, volunteer to perform at a fundraising event. Also, you may check the web for leads, as well. Seeing first-hand that we’ve made someone life better is a distinct pleasure of doing volunteer work.

*Dabble in home-based, part-time projects. The extra cash is always welcome and a chance for you to test the work you might end up fully embracing. Philippine internet is slow but its speed is enough to conduct business online in the comfort of our home. There are various online platforms for freelancing and quite a number of remote jobs available whether locally or internationally.

*Ask for a new task. It doesn’t hurt to ask your supervisor for a task you can experiment on; the keyword is “new” not “more.” This might lead to you stumbling upon something you can be truly passionate about. It maybe requesting a graphic designer to teach you the basics of Adobe InDesign and in exchange you teach her/him how to write a winning e-mail.

*Mess around with your work station. Something as simple as moving a pot of plant from the corner of the room to another is an instant way of freshening things up. Do a regular workstation makeover. If you transfer your computer from the left side to the right side of the desk, then you’re already waking your body up, as you tell it to position itself differently from what it’s used to.

*Establish a new routine. Try going for a walk outside instead of browsing the net during your spare time. Try listening to radio broadcast as your work warm-up instead of music. And so forth.

*Take a different route going to and from the office. Changing route shakes us out and helps our mind alert. When in the middle of the traffic jam, invent road games like creating acronyms out of the letters of a license place. And so on.

*Try a minimum approach for a month, then a maximum approach the following month and see what works!
