Davao Aguilas eye title against Kaya in Tagum City

THE newly-revitalized Davao Aguilas Football Club (FC) eyes the title as it opens bid against Kaya Futbol Club of Makati on Sunday, March 4, at the Davao del Norte Sports and Tourism Complex in Tagum City in the 2nd season of the Philippine Football League (PFL).

Gametime is at 4 p.m.

New marketing head Michael Shaw, during the Davao Sportswriters Association (DSA) Forum at The Annex of SM City Davao, said: "We can be realistic on how we will surpass our performance last season.. we started as a whole team, we will end as a whole team. Be rest assured that our goal is not just to participate but to win this season."

The Davao Aguilas FC, bankrolled by San Miguel Corporation, has acquired a new Korean assistant coach, nine new players from other football clubs and abroad and physical therapists to beef up the squad.

Shaw said they also partnered with country's leading sports science facility, Focus Athletics, for the players' physical program considering the series of injuries that beset the team last year.

"We measured our players scientifically. We get reports starting this season for every two weeks. We established baselines, we also sought practices to synergize all players and provide team building activities so we just don't act as a unit on the field but we play as a family," Shaw said, adding that Davao Aguilas FC is a solid team now.

He also said, "There is pressure to perform. We expect a good game this Sunday with a strong team like Kaya."

Media officer Darrel Cheng said all new nine players will be seeing action in their new season debut game.

"The game will be an intense one with Kaya having had a pre-season game with them," Cheng said.

The team has only four pure-blooded Filipinos in the roster while the rest are half-Filipinos and foreigners.

Shaw said that the first 100 fans inside the DDNSTC will get jerseys. (With Adam B. Morrell)
