Ricky Davao, Ssssuper Ka!

Anong role mo sa “Inday Will Always Love You”?

Ako yung mayamang may-ari ng lechonan na pinagta-trabahoan ni Happylou (Barbie Forteza). Yung schedule namin dito is not easy, we finish at 1 a.m. and wake up 5 in the morning. Like in Bantayan, noong nag-shoot kami, wala kaming time umikot kasi inaabot talaga kami ng gabi, kung minsan umaga na. Yes, 80 percent of the series will be shot in Cebu, so babalik kami for the second leg.

Any upcoming films?

Meron akong ginagawa, tentative title is “Sunday Night Fever” with Nathalie Hart and Diether Ocampo. Medyo sexy film na love triangle. I’m also doing another movie, alam mo Cebuano rin ang role ko, the title is “Kasal” starring Bea Alonzo, Paolo Avelino, Derek Ramsay, Christopher de Leon, Cherrie Gil. Well, i-promote ko lang ha, yung Eat Bulaga Lenten Special, yung isa sa mga episode ako ang nag-direk, the one with Ryza Mae Dizon and Nora Aunor.

What for you is a good film?

A film that would make me think, make me look at myself, make me look at my surroundings, but at the same time, make me smile, laugh, cry and angry, for me, is a good film.

What is your dream project?

Ang dami… marami pa akong hindi nagagawa. Well, ang dream ko lang na sana Filipino actors will act in an international film. With internet, social media and everything, the world is just a small community now `e.

What is your favorite among the films that you’ve done?

“Ang Lalaki sa Buhay ni Selya,” which was restored by ABS-CBN, with Rosanna Roces. Sana ipapalabas yung restored film dito sa Cebu.

How do you compare the Ricky Davao before and now?

Well, yung before, that was 30 years ago, or 30 pounds ago (laughs)… but now I’m trying to lose more weight, nagke-keto (Ketogenic diet or low carb diet) ako ngayon e. I’ve been doing it for five months now and I lost 20 pounds. I’m trying to lose 10 pounds pa siguro. Okay naman, yung blood test ko okay. Mostly, I watched a lot of theatre play.

When you’re a director, how do you deal with different stars?

Case to case e, kung sino siya… kung mas senior ako sa kanya, ano lang parang teacher, parang tatay. Although when I was younger I easily get mad, kasi when you’re a director, you’re the captain of the ship. Halimbawa, ang one day ng isang taping is worth 3 million pesos. That’s for soap opera and there are about 250 people behind me, actors, drivers, lighting people, catering, etc. Kailangan matapos mo ito and they’re all paid. The equipment are paid. Nothing is free now. Stressful yun. Noon pinagsasabihan ko talaga, I really get angry, pero now, medyo tiguwang na tayo, kailangan relax. Health is wealth. You know, yung stress really makes you sick.

What’s the secret of your longevity?

I don’t know… idol ko si Eddie Garcia, he is 88 years old and he’s still very active, he works almost everyday. The first time I met him parang talent pa lang ako and he was already a director also at that time. Now, I’m doing the same thing. Noong buhay pa si Rico Yan, he appeared in Maalaala Mo Kaya, he requested me to direct him and Rico Yan. Nakakatuwa.

Who do you think is the most promising among the young actors today?

Si Barbie Forteza nakatrabaho ko dati sa film na Marikina for Cinemalaya, mga 3 or 4 years ago. Then, ngayon sa “Inday Will Always Love You,” she’s very hardworking, intuitive, galing, I think okay siya, tatagal. Minsan I don’t mind working with… of course it’s nice to work with good actors but a good actor with bad habit? I’d rather work with promising actors na willing to learn at mabait pa. Less stress, better.
