Bzzzzz: ‘Isla De La Victoria’: Look at the package

P18 BILLION DEAL. Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña has unwrapped a development package at the South Road Properties in a Facebook post.

It involves, he says, P18 billion that businessman John Gokongwei has reportedly promised to spend on 80,000 square meters of land: a mall, convention center, casino, restaurants, bars, a casino and more. The city will get 10% (of gross or net income of the facility?) and will own ‘EVERYTHING” (capitalized by the mayor) after 50 years.

Aside from deciding on the name (“Isla de la Victoria,” after Jojo de la Victoria), the city (presumably including the City Council, not just the mayor), may need to look at the terms more closely, including the fine print. Such a major move deserves a thorough study by City Hall’s decision makers, with the help of investment experts and lawyers.

De la Victoria was the city’s Bantay Dagat chief who was killed in 2006 in front of his house in Talisay City. Tomas’ super deal (or pipe dream, depending upon how you look at it) tentatively bears the Name Isla de la Victoria.

Trading insults

NAME-CALLING. Detained Sen. Leila de Lima called Foreign Affairs Secretary Allan Peter Cayetano “the international spokesman for a death-squad government.” No initials or acronym for that.

Cayetano’s return fire: de Lima is a DDS, not Diehard Duterte Supporter but drug syndicate spokesperson.

Both exemplify the great divide: which side to believe in the dangerous drugs campaign.

■ Cayetano says there are no state-sponsored killings in the country and the issue is “weaponized and politicized” by critics of President Duterte;

■ De Lima says Duterte has adopted, though de facto and disguised, the policy of executing drug traffickers, coddlers and addicts.

Red new SC color?

The color red suddenly sprouted at the flag ceremony in the Supreme Court yesterday. Not total red but sprinklings of red: red neckties, red dresses, red shoes. Just emerging, not yet in full display.

They’re said to be anti-CJ Ma. Lourdes Sereno officials and employees. With Sereno on indefinite leave, they’re coming out of closets to begin showing their true sentiment.
