Kin of farmers urged to avail scholarship grant

AN OFFICIAL of the Department of Agriculture (DA) has urged children and relatives of farmers to avail of the scholarship program of DA to earn a degree for free in agricultural studies.

Melba Wee, DA assistant regional director for research policy, planning and regulatory, made the call following observations that only children of farmers finish college studies.

Wee said they can avail of the scholarship program through the department’s Agriculture Credit Enhancement Fund (ACEF).

Wee said through ACEF, each of the scholars is entitled to P2,000 monthly allowance and P1,000 book allowance per semester aside from studying with free tuition fee.

She lamented that the scholarship program had been in existence for years “but there are only few or no takers all.”

The DA official also encouraged the parents to encourage their children to study agriculture.

She said that studying agriculture course doesn’t mean they will only study to cultivate crops citing there are also agricultural allied course that they can choose.

Wee said these are agri-business, veterinary medicine, agronomy and others.

She said to be able to avail of the scholarship program, those interested can visit the DA office near them. (Bong Garcia/SunStar Philippines)
