Number of men attending Women's Day parade increases

WHILE the Women's Day Parade was an event intended for women in different areas and groups in Davao City, an increase of men participants has been noted this year compared to last year, an official said.

Integrated Gender and Development Division head Lorna Mandin said they observed that many men surprisingly joined this year's parade.

An estimate of five percent of those who attended in Thursday's (March 8) parade were men, higher compared to last year's three percent.

Mandin said most men were members of the Philippine National Police, and regional directors of different government agencies, and non-government organizations.

"This means that we are gaining more support in the community level, it is a positive development," she said.

Mandin said that more or less 5,000 participants joined the parade of which majority are women from different barangays, nongovernment organizations, and local and national offices.

She said this year's number of women participants is also the same as last year's.

Mandin said that with the event, they are more challenged to continue their advocacies on women and gender development.

March 8 has been declared as International Women's Day to celebrate the social, economic, cultural and political achievement of women.

In Davao City, it became as an ancillary event for the 81st Araw ng Dabaw celebration.

Women from Barangay 74-A who attended the event expressed that the half-day time they allotted for the event was really worth it.

"Our time was really worth it because there were lots of food, and we had photo opportunities with the security forces," Trinity Panes said.

Merly Lamadora said they really felt special Thursday, March 8, as the women's day parade became a reason for them to mingle with other women from other areas of the city.

The city's Women's Day Parade started around 8 until 11 a.m., from Roxas Avenue to People's Park.
