THE Philippine government calling overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) as modern heroes is but a flattery to escape from its failure to provide these people employment at home. I’m not sure what kind of pride we Filipinos want to instill among the populace by being know as a “kasambahay” exporter, a nature of work that it not high of the social structure. Hence, our OFWSs are prone to all kinds of foreign disrespect and abuses.
Instead of buying war/commercial ships from foreign countries and running after gun makers in Danao City, the Philippines can develop its own manufacturing enterprises (eg., Balamban shipyard), hiring highly-qualified technicians from abroad if needed, availing itself of usual foreign funding or a joint venture agreement.
These may in the future be dollar earners for the Philippines while providing added work at home.
Furthermore, setting up more Export Processing Zones that provide tax holidays and other incentives will also generate more jobs for locals.--Ed Colina, Talisay City
