Women of substance

HOW about we backpedal to the time when men have the sole authority and woman have absolutely no voice in society?

That was how it was before, and remnants of this remain today.

Remnants, because there have been some reforms and victories achieved through generations especially with the annual celebration of the International Women's Day every March 8.

On this day, the strides made into gender equality are celebrated and the remaining shackles that tie women down to subservience are raised.

In the elimination round of Mutya of Davao last March 7, held at Abreeza Mall, J.P Laurel Avenue, Davao City, 28 candidates offered their platform to help raise awareness on gender issues and over-all development of the country.

Designed to live by the Davao City Women Development Code, the Mutya ng Dabaw competition has been highlighting the role of women and their capability to further enhance the conditions in their communities through their advocacies.

In Compostela Valley, women groups also celebrated the International Women's Day last March 8 at the Capitol Ground, Cabidianan, Nabunturan with Senator Cynthia Villar and Presidential daughter Davao City Mayor Sara Z. Duterte-Carpio.

These gatherings demonstrate the solidarity of women.

Women are the light of our society and their voice ought to be heard.
