Puntod village fire kills 5

FIVE people are dead including three minors in a fire in Corrales Extension, District 3, Barangay Puntod in Cagayan de Oro City around 1 a.m. Saturday, March 10.

Senior Fire Officer 1 Imelda Barasan, Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) investigator, identified the victims as siblings Louie, 10 years old, Michelle, 13, Mary Grace, 12, Mark Kenneth Cerillo, 21, and Connie Nandon, 21.

The minors were trapped in a room at the second floor of their two-storey house. Mark's body meanwhile was found at the kitchen area, while her girlfriend Connie's body was found at the house's comfort room.

Barasan said there was only one door out of the concrete house, making it difficult for them to get out because of the confined space.

The fire also injured Melody and Mary Joy Cerillo, Jun and Lilibeth Carillo who all sustained first degree burns.

Fire officials declared fire out at about 2am yesterday. Barasan said the fire caused about P100,000 worth of damages.

Barasan said authorities are still investigating the cause of the fire but said the house’s electrical wiring may have caused the blaze.

The deadly fire came after a week the BFP campaigned for fire safety awareness in the observance of Fire Prevention Month this March.

The BFP has recorded a total of more than 700 fire incidents in Northern Mindanao for the whole year of 2017, wherein more than 500 of them are "accidental," in which a huge percentage of it are due to electrical faults and usually occur in residential areas.
