Ice Seguerra resigns as youth commissioner

NATIONAL Youth Commission (NYC) chairperson Ice "Aiza" Seguerra has stepped down from office, Malacañang said in a press conference held Tuesday, March 13.

Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque Jr. said the Office of Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea has received Seguerra's resignation letter.

He, however, was not privy to how President Rodrigo Duterte acted on Seguerra's resignation.

Seguerra, who was appointed by Duterte as head of the NYC in August 2016, confirmed in a Facebook post that he met with the President on March 5 to personally inform him of his decision to quit the post.

He said he was to serve as NYC chair for one year and seven months, an opportunity which he described as "one of the most unforgettable experiences of (his) life."

"I wanted to personally tell him my reason (why I resigned). Knowing how social media can exaggerate or twist the truth, I wanted to make sure that he's going to hear it from me. He was very understanding and supportive of my decision. He's like a father to me. He listened to me, understood me, and boosted my confidence," he said.

"I told him how much I valued his trust and how this experience made me appreciate public service and our public servants," Seguerra added.

Seguerra advocated for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) awareness and youth representation in government during his stint at NYC.

Seguerra and his partner, Liza Diño, had actively campaigned for Duterte's presidential bid during the 2016 national elections.

Diño, daughter of former Volunteers Against Crime and Corruption chairman Martin Diño who gave way to Duterte in the 2016 presidential race, currently serves as chairperson of the Film Development Council of the Philippines. (SunStar Philippines)
