Clark Airport official backs drive vs illegal wildlife trade

CLARK FREEPORT --- Clark International Airport Corporation acting president Alexander Cauguiran has expressed support for the government’s campaign against the illegal wildlife trade.

Cauguiran said that Clark International Airport supports the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) and the Regional Wildlife Traffic Monitoring Unit (RWTMU) in their campaign to curb the illegal trade of wild plants and animals.

“Clark International Airport is touted as Asia’s next premier gateway and while we are working harder to realize that expectation, the DENR and RWTMU have the full support of Clark airport in your efforts on enforcement and policy improvements to eliminate illegal wildlife trade,” Cauguiran said.

The DENR, in cooperation with the RWTMU, organized orientation about the wildlife laws at Azzurro Hotel in Angeles City recently. A memorandum of agreement was also signed by officials of the DENR, CIAC, and RWTMU.

Cauguiran lauded the collaboration between the DENR, CIAC, RWTMU and other concerned agencies.

He said that Clark airport has established a mechanism called Customs, Immigration, and Quarantine (CIQ) to ensure that laws on taxable goods, human trafficking, and regulations on flora and fauna are enforced.

The expansion in the operations of Clark airport entails stringent measures to ensure that laws on environmental management are observed, according to Cauguiran.

“Now we are about to add another mechanism to the existing CIQ. Thanks to the efforts of DENR for considering Clark airport as one of your partners to institute a wildlife traffic monitoring system,” Cauguiran said.

He also said that airport personnel who attended the orientation will learn a lot about relevant wildlife policies and the standard monitoring and documentation protocols including the processing of wildlife-related cases.
