A POLICE officer was found dead inside the barracks of the old Cagayan de Oro City Police Headquarters in Barangay Carmen at past 12 midnight Wednesday, March 14.
Police Office 3 Joseph Marimon was found on the second floor of the building with a gunshot wound to his forehead. His government-issued Glock 17 firearm was found right beside his body.
Marimon was a resident of Alco Homes, Carmen and assigned at the City Mobile Force Company (CMFC), formerly City Public Safety Company (CPSC).
The CMFC is utilizing the old Maharlika headquarters after the city police office was transferred to Barangay 40.
Senior Inspector Demver Vergara, Police Station 4 chief, said Marimon might have accidentally pulled the trigger when he checked his gun as he prepared for duty to replace an outgoing police officer.
"Incoming officer ni siya unya siguro nag check siya sa iyang baril kung functioning ba then accidentally napusil niya ang sarili. Natingala iyang mga kauban nga naay nadunggan nga nagbuto (He was preparing his stuff because he is an incoming officer. He might have accidentally pulled his gun when he checked it. His colleagues just heard a gunfire and reported it to the PS4)," Vergara said.
"Gakahitabo gyud ning accidental firing (Accidental firing really happens),"he added.
Vergara said it was an accidental firing based on the initial findings of the Scene of the Crime Operatives (Soco).
However, the CMFC is now investigating the incident to check whether there was foul play and suicide, among other possibilities.
Vergara reminded his fellow policemen to observe basic protocol in handling guns.
"Sa atong kapolisan (to our policemen), always observe the basics, i-release ang magazine before doing function check para ma-clear kung empty chamber ug maiwasan ang any untoward incident like accidental firing,"Vergara said.
