Baguio to be included in 'Le Tour'

THE only International Cycling Union (UCI) sanctioned road race in the country is eyeing Baguio once again in its four day race event.

Set from May 20 to 23, Le Tour de Filipinas will be returning to the Summer Capital as one of the host venues of the race featuring 15 teams, most of them foreign squads.

In a letter to Mayor Mauricio Domogan, Le Tour chairman Donna Mau Lina said as one of the host venue, the city will be focused on the world cycling map, providing a platform to showcase what Baguio is proud of - tourist attractions, specialties, among others - to the whole world.

“The Le Tour de Filipinas primarily aims to promote cycling and sports tourism and we would be glad to work hand - in - hand with you in making this program a success,” added Lina’s letter.

The ninth edition of the Le Tour was earlier slated February this year but reports said the UC and Asian Cycling Confederation have approved the new dates of the race that was cancelled because of Mayon Volcano’s eruption.

The organizer, Ube Media Inc., has put premium on the safety of everyone in the race entourage and the host communities, thus the rescheduling of the event.

The route has also been transferred from the Bicol Region—where it was supposed to kick off in Catanduanes to Quezon City, Central Luzon, Ilocos, Cagayan Valley and Baguio City. (Roderick Osis)
