Drug surrenderer shot dead in Naga

A BARANGAY tanod was shot dead Saturday night by an unknown gunman in Sitio Tinago, Barangay South Poblacion, City of Naga.

Police are still investigating if the murder of Reynante Fernandez, 36, may have been related to his being a drug surrenderer.

SPO1 Ken Cabrera of the City of Naga Police Station said that Fernandez was reportedly playing card games with friends at 10:30 p.m. last Saturday, unaware that someone had hidden behind a wall to his back.

Witnesses told police that the unknown assailant pointed a pistol through a hole in the wall and shot Fernandez repeatedly.

Despite being shot, Fernandez was able to run for a few meters before slumping on the ground.

When witnesses found him, Fernandez was already dead.

PO3 Jonathan Largo, one of the investigators, told SunStar Cebu that they are looking at all angles of the case, including Fernandez’s past as a drug user.

Fernandez surrendered to local police during the Oplan Tokhang operations last year.

He was accepted as a tanod following his surrender. (JKV)
