City to fight transport strike with free rides

SOME 14 buses will be deployed today by the Cebu City Government to ferry stranded passengers during the transport strike.

In an interview, City Transportation Office (CCTO) operations chief Francisco Ouano said the buses will be stationed downtown and will ply the routes to Bulacao, Talamban, and Capitol areas.

Eight CCTO mobile patrol cars will also go around the city to check which areas are affected by the protest.

Ounao said they will not deploy additional personnel to help the 278 traffic enforcers regularly fielded to man traffic.

“But we’d just like to ask the public to also prepare their own contingency plans. They also have nothing to worry since we’ve prepared buses that will ferry them for free if the protest will paralyze traffic,” he said.

The Cebu City Police Office (CCPO) said they will monitor rallyists from several cause-oriented groups who will hold a transport strike today.

Supt. Artemio Ricabo, spokesperson and deputy city director for administration of the CCPO, said they have their beat patrols on ready for the protesters.

“We will deploy personnel nearby to make sure that the protest will be peaceful so that if any trouble arises, we can immediately respond to the area,” Ricabo said.

Pinagkaisang Samahan ng mga Tsuper at Opereytor Nationwide-Cebu (Piston-Cebu), BAYAN Central Visayas and other groups are set to stage protests today at 9 a.m. starting from Mabolo going to the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) for a short program.

The group will then march again to LandBank on Sto. Rosario and to Gaisano Metro Colon for their main activity.

This is part of a nationwide protest against the jeepney modernization program of the government.(RTF, JOB)
