DIRECTOR Rene Burdeos of the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) yesterday said any private company can donate funds or properties to a local government unit (LGU) as long as it is for the welfare of the people.
Burdeos made the statement after suspended Toledo City Mayor John Henry “Sonny” Osmeña said he will solicit funds from companies to pay for the salaries of job-order workers.
About 106 job-order personnel of the Toledo City Hospital were terminated from service early this month because the City Council did not act on their 2018 annual budget.
Osmeña, who admitted to have blocked the budget’s approval, urged the job order personnel to return to work as he will solicit funds from private companies for their salaries.
However, the issue was settled after the City Council approved the budget last week.
“Private companies can donate in kind or in cash to the LGUs as part of its corporate social responsibility,” Burdeos said.
In Cebu, the Ramon Aboitiz Foundation Inc. (Rafi) has been making donations to various LGUs and public schools.
Burdeos said there’s a law that urges the private sector to donate to the government for the welfare of the people. (EOB)
