A VILLAGE official was shot and killed by a farmer in the province of Zamboanga del Sur, the police reported Wednesday, March 21.
Chief Inspector Helen Galvez, Police Regional Office-Zamboanga Peninsula information officer, said the incident happened around 9:35 p.m. Tuesday at Purok 3 in the village of Sikatuna, Guipos, Zamboanga del Sur.
Galvez identified the victim as Mario Do-Ong Bustamante, 58, a councilor in the village of Sikatuna.
Galvez said Bustamante was allegedly shot and killed by Jerson Reyes, 33, a farmer.
Investigation showed that Reyes shot and killed Bustamante while the victim and the suspect's brother, Francisco, were walking near Reyes's residence.
Galvez said the suspect fled after the incident but surrendered around 11:50 p.m. Tuesday, March 20, to Romeo Almerante, the village chief of Sikatuna.
Galvez said Almerante turned over the suspect to the police.
The suspect also surrendered the 12-guage shotgun he used in the commission of the crime.
