GMA brings twists to upcoming singing tilt

THE Kapuso Network is bringing some twists to the regular singing competition on TV.

With singing reality shows being one of the well-loved entertainment programs among Filipinos, GMA is set to join the bandwagon once again. However, the giant network is adding certain exciting surprises into it, making it unique compared to what the viewers usually see on television.

Apart from this anticipated twist, no other than the Asia's Songbird, Regine Velasquez-Alcasid, is hosting it. Of course, we know for a fact that the multi-awarded singer's previous shows already produced some of today's top singers in the country. These include Sarah Geronimo, who bested all the contenders of Viva Television's "Star for a Night" on IBC 13 in 2003, and Rachelle Ann Go of "Search for a Star" on GMA Network in 2004.

While speaking with the Davao entertainment press on March 10 at Rekado Restaurant, the 47-year-old singer-actress-host revealed several "The Clash" tidbits.

She said that instead of coaches, mentors, or judges choosing the opponent of each contestant, it will be different this time.

"Sila mismo ang pipili ng gusto nilang makalaban," she said. "Ang labanan na ito ay matira ang matibay; bakbakan."

She added that with such format, the contestants can really "challenge their abilities."

"I've already hosted a number of singing contests, but this is the first time na ganito ang format," she said.

While the competitors have a hand in picking their opponents, which gives them the chance to choose the ones whom they think are not as good as them or they have a higher chance of beating, there are judges who will determine the winner of the weekly clash.

Ai-Ai delas Alas, Christian Bautista and Lani Misalucha will judge the contestants based on their ability and capability as singers.

To prepare the contestants for the weekly battles, Regine noted that the show will "make sure that you have the ability and capability para lumaban."

What is also good about the upcoming TV-based singing tilt is that it has opened its doors to all age brackets. Professional singers can join, too.

"There's no age limit, and even if professional singer ka na at 'di masyadong nag-flourish ang career in the past, you can join. Who knows, ito na ang pagkakataon para buhayin ang career mo," Regine said.

When it comes to the aspiring contestants' audition piece, the "Nineteen 90" artist shared that no limitations have been set as well for the genre and language of the song they are performing.

In the Davao leg of the nationwide auditions for "The Clash" at SM City Davao, auditionees from as far as Lanao del Norte, Sultan Kudarat, and General Santos City came over to try their luck. Regine hosted the activity, while the country's iconic and well-respected songwriter Vehnee Saturno was the audition master.

Prizes at stake for the grand winner are P1 million in cash, house and lot, and a contract with GMA. "The Clash" will air twice on weekends. The exact date of its premiere was not disclosed, though.
