House passes foreign divorce recognition bill on 3rd reading

THE House of Representative has passed on third and final reading the bill that allows the state to recognize divorce decrees issued abroad.

Two hundred and two lawmakers voted for the bill, while three voted against it.

House Bill 7185, or an act "Recognizing the Foreign Decree of Termination of Marriage and Allowing its Subsequent Registration with the Philippine Civil Registry," is authored by Taguig Representative Pia Cayetano, Laguna Representative Sol Aragones, and Masbate Representative Maria Vida Bravo, among others.

The bill eliminates the need for judicial recognition of a foreign decree of termination of marriage that the foreign spouse of a married couple has acquired.

Under the bill, the duly-authenticated foreign decree of termination of marriage shall be enough proof of capacity to remarry.

The bill also covers a Filipino spouse who has acquired foreign citizenship and who has divorced from a Filipino spouse abroad. (SunStar Philippines)
