Bzzzzz: Sara’s HNP to expand operations to Cebu?

THERE’S this talk going the rounds that Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio might tap BOPK’s Margot Osmeña, city councilor and Mayor Tomas Osmeña’s wife, as “coordinator” of Sara’s Hugpong ng Pagbabago (HNP).

HNP was launched by the Davao mayor last Feb. 23 as a regional party, pooling big and prominent names in local politics in that part of the country. A regional version of “super majority.” Initially intended to push presidential-federalism but soon became a force to “foil” House Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez.

A knee-jerk reaction to such “gossip” is that it would bring to Cebu the rivalry between presidential daughter Mayor Sara and presidential friend Alvarez from Mindanao to Cebu. That assumes Sara would spread the fight between PDP-Laban and HNP from the region to the rest of the country.

Bad news to Vice Mayor Edgar Labella who is PDP-Laban’s Cebu City chapter president and probable candidate of that party in the 2019 elections. Sara’s PHN could be pitting against Alvarez’s PDP-Laban in Cebu City.

But what for?

A regional fight between Sara and Alvarez is probable but its expansion to include Cebu City is a stretch, a tad wild. One has to assume that President Duterte is planning something we don’t know.

Some conspiracy theory within the ruling party? A “moro-moro” by two politicians close to the president? Or it could be something circulated by Labella’s rivals to rattle his cage.

In these crazy times, one could expect anything.

The PHN label

“Hugpong” is Cebuano-Bisaya for “group, association or cabal.” “Pagbabago” is Tagalog for “change.” A mix of Bisaya and Tagalog. Or it’s Davaoese-Bisaya which freely mingles Bisaya and Tagalog words..

Sharon-Digong food

Movie-TV entertainer Sharon Cuneta, with her brother and friends, recently had dinner with President Duterte in Malacañang. Their food: sardines.
She didn’t specify the brand. Could be Century Tuna, the sardines she promoted in 1985. But then Digong was the host. Could be something based in Davao.
