PDMPD: Holy Week could be rainy

ZEPHARD Gerhart Caelian, head of the Negros Occidental Provincial Disaster Management Program Division (PDMPD), said that the province may experience a rainy weather this Holy Week as the low-pressure area outside the Philippine area of responsibility (PAR) has developed into a tropical depression.

Based on the data from the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa), the center of Tropical Depression Monday is at 1,120 kilometers (km) of Hinatu-an, Surigao Del Sur which is still outside PAR.

It has a maximum sustained winds of 55km/h with gustiness of up 55km/h near the center. It is expected to enter PAR on Tuesday and will be named “Caloy” which will be the third tropical depression for this year.

In April, at least one tropical depression is still expected to enter the country while on May and June, one to two tropical depressions are expected.

In July, when the rainy season will be at its peak, two to four tropical depressions are expected while on August to September two to three depressions are expected every month based on the outlook of Pagasa for April to September, Caelian added.

Caelian reminded the public that trekking is strictly prohibited within the four-kilometer permanent danger zone of Mount Kanlaon, which is still at the Alert Level 2 status.

"Phreatic explosions may occur due to the hot rocks and water from the volcano," he said.

Caelian also reminded the public to always be on the lookout especially for children when going to resorts and beaches to avoid any untoward incident.
