Unregistered motorized bancas risk apprehension by Coast Guard

THE Maritime Industry Authority (Marina) will start going after motorized bancas that ply various routes without a franchise, to encourage operators to legalize their operations.

Marina 7 Director Venancio Vero said mb Habagat, which capsized off Camotes Island last month, was unregistered and not authorized to ferry passengers.

“We already issued a show-cause order to mb Habagat’s owner for operating without registration, safety certificate, authority and insurance,” he said.

However, Vero said they lack police power to send the violators to jail. He said the Coast Guard (CG) has jurisdiction over sea lanes.

He added that they have no data or estimates as to how many unregistered bancas there are in Region 7, but he will coordinate with the CG to track them down.

As early as 2014, Marina 7 had urged motorized banca owners to register their units and follow maritime laws, rules and regulations, otherwise they would be apprehended. (EOB)
