Cordilleran educators train on teachers’ rights and duties

MORE than 1,000 educators, including those from different provinces and cities in the Cordillera, were aided with new knowledge, following a consultation-workshop on policies related to teachers’ rights and duties.

The consultation-workshop that drew teacher-leaders, school heads and heads of teachers’ organization from the Cordillera, Ilocos Region, Cagayan Valley, Central Luzon, Calabarzon, Mimaropa, Bicol Region, Eastern Visayas, Metro Manila, Visayas, and Mindanao was held at the Baguio Teachers Camp from March 1 to 18.

Department of Education (DepEd) Undersecretary lawyer Tonisito Umali, who served as the keynote speaker, challenged all the participating educators to continue upgrading their knowledge, saying it is one of the keys to improving the quality of education and producing world-class students.

Three experts were invited to share their expertise on important topics need to be learned by the educators.

Benjo Basas, Teachers’ Dignity Coalition national chairperson discussed on TDC’s strategic advocacy on teachers’ rights and welfare while Alan Alegria, chief public information officer of the Civil Service Commission, talked about rules on public sector unionism in DepEd.

Cordilleran lawyer Wade Latawan, legal officers of DepEd central officer, shared inputs on interactive discussion on the common legal issues of teachers and school heads in the department.

The event also gave participants with knowledge on several rules not only of DepEd but also of other key agencies such as the Civil Service Commission, Professional Regulation Commission, and Government Service Insurance System.

It also served as consultation and feedback mechanism that will help in the formulation of policy recommendations and proposals for policies related to teachers’ rights and duties.

The same event also aims to facilitate the formulation of teachers’ organizations in the grassroots that will closely coordinate with DepEd management to ensure the protection of teachers’ rights and welfare.

The theme of the consultation-workshop organized by TDC in coordination with DepEd is “Empowered Schools, Better Education.” Juliet Daganos
