All things revived

IN THE recent years, global trends have been rising from the dead. What people thought was a trend’s demise was actually just a decades-long hibernation period.

Many external factors could have caused these revivals (we’re looking at you, Internet) but, whatever it was, it has now become a small bridge for the infamous “generation gap.” Today, people of all ages post old pictures for “Throwback Thursdays” and brands as well as are fueled by the aesthetic of “all things retro.” Apparently, “old is the new ‘new.’”

Here is a list of things that might trigger people to realize the onset of the Throwback Culture upon us.

‘60s, ‘70s, ‘80s and ‘90s Fashion

From high-waisted pants and shorts, chokers, dangling earrings and fanny packs to ombre hair, bobs and pixie cuts, people don’t realize how many of these things have been inspired by styles from previous decades. All these things mentioned were not even huge in the 2000s? Many of these signature statements go way back. In the words of Coco Chanel: “Fashion changes, but style endures.” Fashion and style, moves in a wheel. Today it is out of style, tomorrow it’s back. It might be smart to not throw out all your good-quality clothes just because they’re out of style. Who knows what trend tomorrow might bring back?

TV and Movie Remakes and Reruns

We’re pretty sure you’ve at least seen one of these shows: “Riverdale,” “Stranger Things,” “Westworld,” “Maleficent,” “Alice in Wonderland,” “Beauty and the Beast” and Nickelodeon’s “The Splat.” These are just a few shows that offer a cinematic salute to storylines, characters and movie themes that have made it big in the past. For instance, “Riverdale” uses the names and character profiles from the “Archie” comics. “Stranger Things” pays homage to old ‘80s horror, sci-fi and thriller movies in one spankin’ series backed up by a solid soundtrack of popular ‘80s hits. “Westworld” is a modern mind-blowing series remake of the old 1973 movie with the same title. The list goes on.

Board Games and Card Games

Board game cafes are popping up around town, offering a wide array of card and board games for customers to enjoy. But, before these board game cafes became a thing and eons before the birth of video games, children and adults used to spend rainy days in the comfort of their homes with a good board game or two. Although the 52-card standard deck was and will forever be the starter pack for card games, newer card games are being made. Of course, not all trends result from the reawakening of an old one—but many classics still prove to have stood the test of time, earning a place to be revered in modern culture.

The Throwback Culture presents itself in waves of nostalgia for those who have lived through the actual budding years of a trend, but for the newer generations it also serves as a way to rediscover the wonders of the decades that have passed. From an optimistic point of view, it could even be the start of a conversation that might lead to the narrowing of the generation gap.
