Firm partners with DepEd to aid 23 schools in La Carlota

SUGAR and ethanol producer Roxas Holdings Inc. (RHI) recently signed two memorandum of agreements (MOAs) with the Department of Education (DepEd) aimed at helping 23 schools in La Carlota City.

The agreements include the provision of 240 training materials for teachers and 214 books to schoolchildren.

They also cover the repair of stage and establishment of a reading park at La Carlota Sugar Central Elementary School seen to benefit at least 190 pupils.

RHI Corporate Social Responsibility Department head Angeline Bondad, in a press statement, said the projects are part of the company's program called "Reaching Out for Environmental Awareness and Discovery (Read) for Excellence."

This is being rolled out in partnership with RHI's subsidiaries Central Azucarera de la Carlota Inc. (Caci) and Roxol Bioenergy Corporation (RBC), both are located in the said city, she added.

The "Read for Excellence" program complements the "Adopt-A-School" initiative of the DepEd that encourages private companies to assist in the delivery of better quality education to public schools in the country.

La Carlota City Schools Division Superintendent Portia Mallorca, who was present at the MOA signing, said the initiative also adheres to the "education for all" program of the agency.

"We support the Leadership for Excellence, Empowerment for Excellence, Academic Excellence, and Partnership for Excellence. Mediocrity is not a way of life," Mallorca stressed.

For his part, Ernesto Malbas, project director of Eskwelahan Sang Katawhan-Negros (Eskan), has encouraged the school children and teachers to collaborate in maximizing the opportunity.

Eskan is one of the partners of Caci, especially in implementing its corporate social responsibility projects.

"Storytelling empowers children to perform well in school. Teachers must continue to develop the reading habit among children," he added. (EPN)
