Authorities told: Intensify anti-drugs campaign this summer

AN OFFICIAL of the Negros Occidental Provincial Government has urged the authorities to intensify their anti-drugs campaign this summer.

Third district Board Member David Albert Lacson, chair of the Provincial Board committee on peace and order, said several towns and cities in the province will be having their annual fiestas this summer, so it is imperative for the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) and the Philippine National Police (PNP) to intensify their campaign against illegal drugs.

"We will also celebrate the Panaad sa Negros Festival this month where people will converge for the celebration with a lot of activities and enjoyment," he said.

That's also the time when illegal drug activities are rampant, he said, citing the reports of authorities.

Lacson said that during the recent meeting of the Provincial Peace and Order Council, the provincial police reported that even if illegal drug activities in Negros Occidental have been minimized, there are still three local government units to watch in terms of the alleged presence of high value drug personalities in their areas.

The localities, according to Lacson, are Silay City because of the presence of top drug personality Michael Divinagracia, who is still at large; San Carlos City because of its proximity and passageway to Cebu; and Hinigaran because of the alleged presence of personalities behind the illegal drug activities.

Silay City Mayor Mark Andrew Golez earlier ordered the police to go after Divinagracia.
