Navy retrieves cadaver off Basilan

THE Naval Forces Western Mindanao (Navforwem) has recovered the cadaver of an unknown person floating off Basilan province, a top military official announced.

Rear Admiral Rene Medina, Navforwem commander, said the cadaver was recovered on Saturday by the crew of BRP-Subanon (LC-291) skippered by Lieutenant Commander Bernardo Carpio at 3.8 nautical miles southeast off Coco Island, Basilan.

Medina said the BRP-Subanon personnel were conducting maritime patrol when they spotted and retrived the cadaver around 7 a.m., Saturday, March 31.

Medina said the cadaver belongs to a male who was about five feet and seven inches tall and wearing green shorts and sleeveless red stripes shirt.

He said the cadaver, which is believed to have been floating for at least 24 hours, was transferred to Ensign Majini Pier at Naval Station Romulo Espaldon in this city for turn over to proper authorities and identification.

Before the recovery of the cadaver, Lieutenant Commander Cesar Pangan, Jr., commanding officer of 1st Boat Attack Division-Western Mindanao, has received report that an employee of the Lourdes fishing firm on March 25 jumped off the vessel while on fishing venture in the vicinity of Coco Island.

The employee was identified as a certain Rolan Banua.

The Navforwem is confirming whether or not the recovered cadaver was than of Banua, according to Medina. (SunStar Philippines)
