Arts Awake: NCCA launches Timpalak Kundiman 2018

NATIONAL Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) is proud to announce that it is now accepting entries to the Timpalak Kundiman 2018.

Timpalak Kundiman is a competition geared towards the preservation and development of the kundiman form – a classical Filipino love song characterized by three-fourths (¾) beat, minor to major key progression and must be arranged for piano or guitar accompaniment.

Among the kundiman pieces that were set as examples for the competition are “Anak-Dalita,” “Pakiusap,” at “Madaling-araw” by Francisco Santiago and “Nasaan Ka, Irog,” “Kundiman ng Luha,”and “Himutok” by Nicanor Abelardo.

The competition is open to Filipino composers and musicians of the kundiman form. Entrants must not be affiliated in any way to the NCCA, Komisyon sa Wikang Filipino, and the National Book Development Board.

Submissions must follow traditional musical and lyrical kundiman components.

Lyrics must be written in Filipino and has traditional rhyming patterns following rules of the Panulaang Filipino.

PDF file of the lyrics, mp3 demo file of the music arranged with accompaniment, and accomplished forms must be submitted no later than 15 March 2018.

Finalists will be announced on March 26, 2018 and would join the Konsiyerto ng Kundiman happening on 15 April 2018 for the judging and announcement of winners.

The Timpalak Kundiman is part of the celebration of the National Literature Month 2018 led by the NCCA, Komisyon sa Wikang Filipino, and the National Book Development Board, in accordance to the mandate of Presidential Proclamation No. 968 (s. 2015).

NLM celebrates Filipino literature in its many forms.

The month-long celebration also commemorates the lives and works of renowned Filipino writers whose contributions shaped the literary scene in the country.
